	Reducing Alcohol-Related Harms in Los Angeles County Summary: This report examines the relationship between the density of alcohol outlets and alcohol- related harms in cities and communities across the county. It ranks cities and communities based on these harms (violent crimes, alcohol-involved motor vehicle crashes, and alcohol-related deaths) to compare areas within the county. Results show that increased rates of alcohol- related harms were all associated with having high density of alcohol outlets in that city or community. 	Food Insecurity in Los Angeles County Summary: Food insecurity remains a growing problem across Los Angeles County. In households with incomes less than 300% FPL, food insecurity steadily increased from 25.5% in 2005 to 30.6% in 2011, leveling off from 2011 to 2015 (29.2%), and decreasing to 26.8% in 2018. In 2018, 26.8% or 516,000 Los Angeles County households with incomes less than 300% FPL experienced food insecurity, which includes households reporting low food security and very low food security. Of these, 203,000 households experienced very low food security. Among those living in food insecure households, 40.1% were ages 30-49 compared to food secure households in which 34.7% were ages 30-49. Among those living in food insecure households, 67.3% self-identified as Latino, 13.9% as White, 11.9% as African American, and 6.2% as Asian. Nearly three quarters of a million, or 746,000, Latino adults with household incomes less than 300% FPL in Los Angeles County were living in food insecure households. Among those living in food insecure households, 40.5% had less than a high school education compared to food secure households in which 29.6% had less than a high school education. 	Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption Among Children and Adolescents in Los Angeles County Summary: In Los Angeles County, approximately 840,000, or 1 in 3 children, consumed SSBs on an average day (2018). Male children were more likely to consume SSBs than female children, 40.8% versus 33.5%. Among children less than 17 years old, SSB consumption on an average day was highest among adolescents age 12-17 at 45%. Daily consumption among children 6–11 years and 0-5 years was 39.3% and 26.5%, respectively. Among households living below 100% of the federal poverty level (FPL), 47% of children consumed one or more SSB per day, compared to 22% of children living in households at or above 300% FPL. SSB consumption was higher among Black and Latino children, 47.6% and 43.1% respectively, compared to Asian and White children (25.4% and 21.0% respectively). 	Disability Among Adults in Los Angeles County Summary: More than one in five (22.6%) adults in LA County reported having a disability in 2015. The prevalence of disability increased with age, from 10.3% among those 18-24 years of age to 41.9% among those 65 and older. African Americans had the highest prevalence of disability (33.5%), followed by Whites (29.9%), American Indians/Alaska Natives (27.0%), Latinos (18.1%), and Asians (14.3%).Disability prevalence was inversely related to income. 	Recent Trends in Adult Use of Marijuana Summary: The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) announces an increase in marijuana usage among adults in a new report titled Recent Trends in Adult Use of Marijuana. The report’s analysis of data from the Los Angeles County Health Survey (LACHS) shows that the percentage of adults ages 18 and over who reported using marijuana in the past year increased by 33% (from 9% to 12%) from 2011 to 2015. Marijuana use increased by almost 50% among adults aged 21-29. In 2015, use was highest among 18-20 year olds (27%) and 21-29 year olds (22%). Men were twice as likely to use marijuana as women (16% vs. 8%). Additionally, the use of marijuana with a medical marijuana ID card or a doctor’s recommendation increased by over 50% (from 21% to 33%) from 2011 to 2015. 	Food Insecurity in Los Angeles County Summary: In 2015, food insecurity affected 29.2% of Los Angeles County households with incomes less than 300% FPL, or 561,000 households; very low food security impacted 11.3% of households, or 217,000 households. 11.3% (217,000) households living below 300% FPL experience very low food supply, disrupted eating patterns, and reduced food intake. Latinos are impacted the most, 67.4% followed by 14.7% of whites, 10.6% of African Americans, and 6.6% of Asians, respectively. In addition, studies show that diets high in processed foods may contribute to the development of chronic diseases. Families and individuals in food insecure households may have poor diets because of limited healthy and affordable options resulting in consumption of less expensive fast food that is low in nutritional value, high in calories, and higher in sodium, saturated fats, and sugars.
