Surfaces

Managing editor(s): Jean-Claude Guédon

About

Surfaces is a scholarly journal focused on comparative literature which ran from 1991 to 1999.

It was first published by the Département de Littérature comparée (Université de Montréal), and then by the Presses de l’Université de Montréal. Its name was given by Wlad Godzich. Jean-claude Guédon, Bill Reading, until his death in 1994, and Terry Cochran, who are all part of the Département de littérature comparée, have lead the journal in which more than a hundred articles were published in French, English and even German.

Launched at the very start of the internet (1991), Surfaces is among the first scholarly journals in the world, and certainly the first in Canada, to have been disseminated digitally and in open access. The journal’s archives are now openly accessible on Érudit.
